Chicago deserves better stories.

Every Chicagoan deserves stories that paint the whole picture of who we are as a city. Plays that look and sound like all of us. Plays that inspire action, empathy, and hope among neighbors. Plays that reflect our lives and help us imagine our future together.

Investing in playwrights means giving them the support and resources they need to build plays that have impact.

  • Our Neighborhood Residency program lays the foundation: by partnering playwrights with their neighbors, we're helping them ground their work in empathy and understanding.
  • Our Chicago Works Commission builds upon that foundation by supporting the playwright in creating a new Chicago play that speaks directly to and about our city.
  • And our classes - like our Write Where You Live class for adults or the CHIWRIGHTS program we're developing for teens - promote dramatic literacy, encourage civic engagement, and help playwrights hone their skills.

When you donate to Step Up, you're investing in our city's playwrights, and in plays that speak to all of us.

Together, we can build better stories for Chicago.
